Getting a 20X return on ad spend is possible, but it does not happen by launching a few ads and hoping Facebook finds the right customers.
Strong results begin with the right strategy—and the first part of that strategy is your creative.
Your creative includes three elements:
These elements determine whether people stop, pay attention, click and ultimately buy.
If your creative fails to capture attention, even the best targeting and campaign structure cannot save it.
Here is how to create Meta ads that perform.
1. Prioritize quality
Your videos and images represent your business before someone ever visits your website.
They need to be clear, engaging and professionally presented.
That does not mean every video needs an expensive production team. It means the content must be intentional, easy to understand and created for the platform.
A poorly executed video will not outperform a strong image simply because video is considered more engaging.
In many campaigns, images perform just as well as—or better than—videos.
A strong image is always more valuable than a video people immediately scroll past.
2. Create content in the correct formats
For Facebook and Instagram ads, prepare your creatives in both:
- Square format for feeds
- Vertical format for Stories and Reels
Using the right dimensions allows Meta to place your ads across more locations without awkward cropping or important information being cut off.
Every image and video should be designed for the placement where it will appear.
3. Make your ads feel organic
The best-performing ads often do not immediately feel like advertisements.
They look like content that naturally belongs in someone’s feed.
Your audience should feel as though they are hearing from a helpful expert, creator or trusted person in their network—not being interrupted by a company pushing a sale.
Lead with useful information, advice or a problem your audience recognizes.
Give people a reason to stop before asking them to take action.
The objective is not to disguise your offer. It is to earn attention before presenting it.
4. Capture attention immediately
You have approximately two seconds to stop someone from scrolling.
Begin your video with movement and a strong hook.
You might:
- Walk toward the camera
- Raise or move an object
- Change the camera angle
- Use a quick visual transition
- Begin with a bold question or statement
The movement earns the initial attention.
The hook gives the viewer a reason to continue watching.
Avoid long introductions.
Start with the problem, result or surprising idea your audience cares about most.
5. Keep the video moving
If you or a creator appears in the video, avoid sitting completely still and speaking for the entire ad.
Natural movement keeps the screen visually interesting.
You can walk, change position, demonstrate something or use multiple short clips.
Every moment should move the viewer toward the next one.
Your video does not need to be complicated, but it should maintain enough visual energy to keep people engaged.
6. Keep image ads simple
An effective image ad should be easy to understand within seconds.
Limit the text to:
- One short headline
- One brief supporting line
- A clear discount or offer, when relevant
Do not cover the image with paragraphs of copy.
Your primary ad text and landing page can provide the additional details.
The image has one main job: stop the scroll and communicate the core idea.
People also tend to respond well to images featuring other people—particularly clear, positive images where the subject is smiling.
Test different backgrounds, layouts, colors, fonts and numbers of people to learn what your audience responds to.
You do not need to restrict every ad to your standard brand template.
Performance creative requires experimentation.
7. Highlight what makes your business different
Your audience should immediately understand why they should choose you instead of a competitor.
Your distinguishing elements might include:
- Better quality
- Faster service
- More experience
- Premium materials
- A more convenient process
- A stronger guarantee
- More affordable pricing
- A unique method or technology
Choose the strongest points and make them visible throughout your videos, images and copy.
Do not expect prospective customers to investigate your business and discover the difference themselves.
Make the value clear from the beginning.
Test, learn and improve
There is no single creative that works for every audience.
Strong advertising comes from testing intentional variations.
Do not change everything randomly.
Test one clear idea against another and use the results to improve the next round of creatives.
Exceptional results rarely come from one lucky advertisement.
Strong results come from a repeatable process of creating, testing and improving.
This is only Part 1
This is only the first part of building campaigns capable of generating a 20X return on ad spend.
Great creative gets people to stop and click.
The next step is making sure the campaign strategy, offer and customer journey turn that attention into revenue.
Better creative earns the click.
Better strategy turns that click into profitable growth.
